Amazon will discontinue support for Cloud Cam - what this implies

Amazon has announced that it would discontinue support for its Cloud Cam home security camera by the end of the year, but it intends to ease the impact by giving users a few freebies.
Amazon said in an email sent to impacted consumers that it would replace the Cloud Cam with its more recent security camera, the Blink Mini, and grant a $100 Blink Subscription Plus Plan for one year.

In 2020, Amazon introduced the Alexa-compatible Blink Mini shortly after discontinuing sales of the Cloud Cam. According to the manufacturer, the Mini provides "an intuitive interior security camera experience with 1080p HD video, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networking, night vision, motion detection, and two-way audio."

Customers may continue to utilise their Cloud Cams until December 2. The camera and its accompanying applications will lose functioning afterwards. Additionally, all video recording history will be erased, however consumers may keep any material by downloading it before the deadline in December.

No longer can Cloud Cam Key Edition be used to connect to compatible locks or manage PIN numbers in the Amazon Key app. In this situation, impacted customers will get a complimentary Echo (4th generation) that will function as a Zigbee hub, allowing Alexa to manage associated locks remotely.

Once the year of free access expires, new Blink Cam users will be required to join up for at least the Basic Plan ($3 per month/$36 per year) to utilise some capabilities, such as rapid video access, that previously available for free with the Cloud Cam.

Amazon said in a recent email to Cloud Cam users, "With your support over the last five years, Cloud Cam has acted as a dependable interior security camera and a hub for Amazon Key-compatible smart locks that function with Alexa. As the number of Alexa-enabled smart home devices increases, we are concentrating our efforts on Ring, Blink, and other technologies that make your home smarter and simplify your daily activities. We have thus decided to end support for the Amazon Cloud Cam and its associated applications."

Before December, Amazon intends to email all registered Cloud Cam owners instructions on how to acquire their free Blink Mini and (if appropriate) Echo.
