NASA's modified Boeing 747 SP SOFIA will be permanently grounded.

Even as NASA releases photographs showing progress on the James Webb Space Telescope's commissioning, plans are being made to permanently ground the Boeing 747-based Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).

On April 28, the modified Boeing 747 SP and its telescope reached the end of their mission, ensuring that there will be no additional mission extensions. Once the current mission extension expires, operations will stop "no later than September 30, 2022."

SOFIA, a joint NASA-German Space Agency project at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), was running on borrowed time.

The platform was declared completely operational in 2014, after development started in 1996 and the first light was visible in 2010.

The spacecraft's five-year primary mission ended in 2019, and a three-year mission extension will end this year.

"The National Academies' Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2020 reviewed SOFIA as part of its analysis of the present status of astronomical research," NASA stated.

According to the study, SOFIA's costs were not justified, and its capabilities did not "substantially overlap" with the survey's goals.

SOFIA's telescope is visible via a big door towards the tail of the aircraft's fuselage. According to NASA, observations are made when the plane is travelling between 38,000 and 45,000 feet over 99 percent of Earth's infrared-blocking atmosphere.

  • NASA pilots an aircraft into the shadow of a Kuiper Belt object on Earth.
  • SpaceX's Starlink service receives its first aviation client, with Rocket Lab attempting a mid-air recovery of a falling rocket.
  • NASA enlists the help of private companies to build a near-Earth communications network.
  • The telescope's equipment work in the near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths, and engineers have the chance to maintain and upgrade the payload since the Boeing 747 lands after each journey.

However, all wonderful things must come to an end. The utility of the flying telescope has long been questioned, especially when compared to the citations created by space telescopes like the Hubble.

The Boeing 747SP was built in 1977 and passed through the hands of Pan Am and United Airlines before being converted as an observation aircraft (including the cutting of that large hole in the fuselage.)

The mission has made many discoveries, including the discovery of water on the Moon's sunlit surface in 2020. Before the mission ends, further flights are planned for the observatory, including a trip to New Zealand.
